Arch Coal's First Quarter Conference Call To Be Broadcast On Internet

St. Louis – April 15, 2002 - Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE:ACI) will discuss its first quarter financial results in a conference call that will be broadcast live over the Internet on Monday, April 22, at 11 a.m. EDT. Participating in the call will be Steven F. Leer, Arch’s president and chief executive officer, and Robert J. Messey, Arch’s senior vice president and chief financial officer.

The webcast will be accessible via the “investor” section of the Arch Coal Web site, at www.archcoal.com. Following the live event, replays of the webcast will be available on the site through May 6, 2002.

Arch Coal’s first quarter earnings release will be distributed via PR Newswire prior to the market’s opening on the day of the webcast, and will be posted to the company’s Web site at that time.

Arch Coal is the nation’s second largest coal producer with subsidiary operations in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Through these operations, Arch Coal provides the fuel for approximately 6 percent of the electricity generated in the United States.
