Arch Coal Will Sponsor Teacher Achievement Awards Again In Upcoming School Year in West Virginia

Charleston, West Virginia (Aug. 7, 2003) -- Arch Coal, Inc. will continue its popular Teacher Achievement Awards program in the upcoming school year, the company said today. The Arch Coal program is the longest running, privately-sponsored teacher recognition program in West Virginia.
According to John R. Snider, Arch Coal vice president, external affairs, eastern region, nomination forms will soon be available in schools throughout the state and on the Arch Coal Web site (www.archcoal.com). In addition, nomination forms will be available at Speedway locations in West Virginia.
The Arch Coal teacher recognition program is unique because it features public nomination and peer selection. A blue-ribbon panel of experienced educators, including some who have previously won the Arch Coal award, select 10 recipients from applications in which the teachers discuss their teaching philosophies and the techniques they employ in the classroom. Each recipient is provided a $2,500 unrestricted cash award.
Again this year, the West Virginia Education Association (WVEA) will partner with the company in supporting the awards program and offer, through the West Virginia Foundation for the Improvement of Education (WVFIE), $1,000 grants to the schools of the winning teachers, according to Snider. WVEA created the WVFIE foundation in 1993 to assist in securing resources to aid in the education of at-risk students.
"Arch Coal appreciates the continued support of the West Virginia Education Association, which has partnered with us on these awards since their inception 18 years ago," Snider said "The grants to the schools of our recipients, which WVFIE began last year, is a generous, additional measure of support that makes this awards program even more meaningful. We're also very pleased to have the continued support of the Department of Education and Speedway."
Arch Coal is the nation's second largest coal producer and a supplier of clean-burning, low-sulfur coal exclusively. Approximately 2,000 people are employed by Arch's operations in West Virginia.
