Arch Coal Earns National Awards for Environmental Stewardship, Outreach

CHARLESON, W.Va. (Oct. 17, 2003) - Two Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE: ACI) subsidiaries, Catenary Coal Co. and Coal-Mac, Inc., recently were honored for environmental stewardship and community outreach at the National Association of State Land Reclamationists' (NASLR) 31st annual conference.
Catenary Coal Co., located in Eskdale, W.Va., received the "Outstanding Reclamation Award" for its leadership efforts in reclaiming mine lands, including the creation of wetlands, the enhancement of wildlife and first-of-its-kind reforestation research.
Coal-Mac, Inc., located in Ragland, W.Va., received the "Outreach Award" for its active role in creating a positive image for the mining industry, including educational programs for elementary school children.
Coal-Mac, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Arch Coal, annually ships more than 2.0 million tons of coal. Earlier this year, the U.S. Dept. of Environmental Protection honored Coal-Mac with the Greenlands Award, West Virginia's top reclamation award.
Catenary Coal Co., a wholly owned subsidiary of Arch Coal, ships more than 6.5 million tons of coal each year. Also in 2003, the Society of American Foresters presented Catenary with the Woodlands West Virginia Award.
Arch Coal, Inc. is the nation's second largest coal producer and mines low-sulfur coal exclusively. Through its subsidiary operations in West Virginia, Kentucky, Virginia, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah, Arch provides the fuel for approximately 6 percent of the electricity generated in the United States.
