ST. LOUIS (August 27, 2007) - The Arch Coal Foundation will continue underwriting of its unique teacher recognition programs in West Virginia, Wyoming and Utah during the 2007-2008 school year, according to Deck Slone, the Foundation's president.

In addition, the Foundation plans to undertake a new teacher-focused program in Colorado in the new school year, he said.

The Arch Coal Foundation sponsors the longest running, privately sponsored classroom teacher program in West Virginia, a similar statewide program in Wyoming, and a regional program in Utah. The program asks the public to nominate excellent teachers and then asks peers to judge the applications. In total, the company plans to recognize 27 teachers in West Virginia, Wyoming and Utah this school year.

Slone, who also serves as a vice president of investor relations and public affairs for Arch Coal, Inc., said education is one of the largest areas of giving for the Foundation because the company believes that quality education enhances our country's standard of living and global competitiveness.

"Modern mining relies on highly sophisticated, 21st Century tools and processes," said Slone. "Our company relies on highly skilled and well-educated employees to advance our future. The Arch Coal Foundation, Arch Coal and its employees appreciate the commitment and professionalism of the many teachers who bring the 'magic of learning' into their classrooms every day."
