Arch Coal's third quarter conference call to be broadcast on Internet

St. Louis - October 9, 2001 - Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE:ACI) will discuss its third quarter financial results in a conference call that will be broadcast live over the Internet on Monday, October 22, 2001, at 11 a.m. Eastern time. Participating in the call will be Steven F. Leer, Arch's president and chief executive officer, and Robert J. Messey, Arch's senior vice president and chief financial officer.

The webcast will be accessible via the "investor" section of the Arch Coal website, at www.archcoal.com. Following the live event, replays of the webcast will be available on the site until November 5, 2001.
