Arch Coal's Second Quarter Conference Call to be Broadcast on Internet

ST. LOUIS (July 14, 2004) - Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE:ACI) will discuss its second quarter financial results in a conference call that will be broadcast live over the Internet on Monday, July 26, at 11:00 a.m. ET. Participating in the call will be Steven F. Leer, Arch's president and chief executive officer, and Robert J. Messey, Arch's senior vice president and chief financial officer.

The webcast will be accessible via the "investor" section of the Arch Coal Web site at www.archcoal.com. Following the live event, replays of the webcast will be available on the site for three weeks.

Arch Coal's second quarter earnings release will be distributed via PR Newswire before the market opens on Monday, July 26, and will be posted to the company's Web site at that time.
