Arch Coal's Coal-Mac Subsidiary Earns Three Statewide Distinctions for Safety and Environmental Excellence

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (January 26, 2007) – Arch Coal's Coal-Mac, Inc. recently earned three statewide awards for its 2006 excellence in safety and environmental performance at the 34th Annual West Virginia Mining Symposium in Charleston, W.Va.

The Mountaineer Guardian safety award was presented to Coal-Mac's Holden 22 mine. The employees completed the entire year, more than 146,000 employee-hours, without a single reportable accident.

"With safety as a core value, Coal-Mac exemplifies Arch Coal's long-standing commitment to mine safety," said Steven F. Leer, chairman and chief executive officer of Arch Coal. "We applaud the efforts of the Coal-Mac employees in earning statewide recognition for their excellence in mine safety."

In the area of environmental stewardship, Coal-Mac's Phoenix No. 1 mine earned the Wildlife West Virginia award for its outstanding results in wildlife habitat enhancement in Mingo County, W.Va. Coal-Mac engineers implemented a diverse mixture of tree and grass species on its reclaimed mine land to attract a diverse insect population for a stable food supply for native wild turkeys.

Additionally, Coal-Mac's Holden 22 surface mine earned a 2006 reclamation award for the environmental restoration of nearly two miles of previously abandoned mine lands to approximate original contours of the surrounding terrain in just two years.
