St. Louis, MO - June 22, 1998 - The Board of Directors of Arch Coal, Inc. (NYSE:ACI) today declared a quarterly dividend of 11.5 cents per share on the company's common stock. The dividend is payable September 15, 1998, to shareholders of record on August 14, 1998.

Arch Coal, Inc. and its independent subsidiaries are engaged in the mining, processing and sale of bituminous coal, which they market to electric utilities in the eastern and midwestern United States and abroad.
